Here's my review of The Lakeside Villas, located at the golden mile of Taupo. We stayed for an entire week (7 nights) during the Christmas holiday period from 23 Dec to 30 Dec 2016.

The Lakeside Villas does not have a presence on TripAdvisor or Booking.com. The simple reason is because the units are obtained based on timeshare ownership.
We were lucky to get a unit as there was one availability during the Christmas period. We initially planned to stay for 3 nights in Napier, 3 nights in Taupo and 1 night in Rotorua, but packing and unpacking is an incredible hassle as we had found out in the past month. So we sourced for a unit on Airbnb.com and lo and behold. This unit popped up and since timeshare ownership works on a weekly basis, we decided to book this unit for the weekly block. To be frank, we were very lucky to get this unit. I'll explain why in detail in my review below.
Booking platform - Airbnb.com
Price - NZD 181 per night
Room Type - Bach (Two Bedroom Villa)
Review of The Lakeside Villas
Our 16th accommodation during our 2 month NZ road trip. We stayed here for 7 nights during X'mas season. Overall, this was a place that felt like home and yet had the luxury of many free activities at your disposal.
We made the booking through Airbnb.com. Our host advised us to call The Lakeside Villas in advance and so we did two days before arriving to make sure we could check in smoothly. Thankfully we did so 'cos we were intending to arrive around 6pm when their front desk was closed so they gave the necessary instructions.
Timeshare units are already pre-allocated spaces. Ours was a two-bedroom villa (three if you consider that the living room can be partitioned by a curtain).
It is the most spacious and well equipped place we stayed during our entire trip. We had our own private courtyard with an outdoor spa bath. There's a double bed in the master bedroom and 3 single beds in another bedroom. The kitchen is by far the best equipped - apart from the usual stove top, microwave and cutlery, there's an oven, dishwasher and separate wine and champagne glasses. There are 3 bathrooms - one with a tub, the second with a washing machine, dryer and the third is a small one right at the lobby.
Even the shared facilities were top notch (and I bullshit you not). There's a tennis, squash court, steam rooms, jacuzzis, a playground, trampoline, billiard room, library, mini golf (clubs included). If you want to kayak, no problem, just grab it along with the kayak trolley to pull across the road as long as it's available. Oh yes, there's even bicycles and a swimming pool too. This is an amazing plethora of facilities that we had encountered for the first time during our trip.
It is located along the Lake Terrace stretch, the golden mile of Taupo. It is just a 2 minute drive to Taupo town central and the Lake Taupo waterfront is conveniently found just across the main road.
Overall, this ranks as one of the best places we'd stayed during our trip and I wouldn't have known about it if I didn't use Airbnb. Again, if you want to try Airbnb, do use my link to get NZD 25 of travel credit.
Our Airbnb.com review
After a long drive from the Wellington region, we were delighted to find that Ollie offered a more than satisfactory accommodation in Taupo. We communicated purely through messaging and while there was a minor hiccup, I can say that upon arrival, we were overall very glad with what Lakeside Villas had to offer. This was a 2-storey villa unit that offered much privacy and space. The best part were the facilities which our kids definitely enjoyed - a spa pool (in the unit itself), an indoor pool, kayaks and a private courtyard. It's centrally located along Taupo's Lake Terrace so restaurants are well within a short drive's reach. Thanks for sharing Ollie!
