Day 36
Yup, this was still part of the detour around Kaikoura, no thanks to that big earthquake. This was a pretty scenic route though though it was a full day of travelling.
Distance travelled: 241km (3h 20min)
Maruia Falls
After a few hours drive, we plonked ourselves down for lunch at Maruia Falls. Nope, we didn't know too much about this spot though the falls itself were nice to just view from above and take a quick hike down for a slightly better angle.
Murchison
As we were about to reach St Arnaud, we stopped by at this little town to restock on our dwindling groceries. Aye, since Christchurch, there wasn't much to buy since yea?
St Arnaud Tophouse Historic Inn (Accommodation)
This was one of the top lodgings we visited on our trip. The only regret we had was not staying for a longer period beyond a day.
In fact, we asked the owners if they had a vacancy beyond one day. It was at the top of a mountain and the view was breathtaking.
The cabin we stayed in was amazingly large, well stocked and cozy. Absolutely lovely. Did we mention they have a very friendly dog too? Well, now you know.
Lake Rotoiti (Place to visit - Free)
The actual visit to St Arnaud was actually on the following day. We took a short drive to Lake Rotoiti where we could bask in a marvelous view of the surrounding mountains. Not to mention the babies had a whale of the time with the ever handy playgound in the vicinity.
