This was our 3rd accommodation during our 2 month NZ road trip. We stayed for 3 nights.
Te Nikau is quite a unique place and your experience depends on which unit you pick. Mamaku Cottage is a self contained unit located the closest to the main road and I would describe it somewhere between a backpacker's unit and a motel. The 'Cottage' is not entirely a cottage as there's a unit above so you can hear the floorboards creak throughout the day. There's a nice garden in front and a very cozy and modern interior. However, no bathroom amenities eg shampoo are provided, there's no room cleanup on a daily basis and no place directly outside to throw your rubbish. There's a small area to park your car outside though it's not ideal - driving in just churns up all the stones and mud.
Navigating around the narrow roads of the Retreat using a sedan can be tricky, especially when you need to get your laundry done. While there's no TV, thankfully there's free Wifi. It is definitely a peaceful place though I would hesitate to say it's a family friendly.
