Day 57 - Coromandel Region

Day 57

Travel Distance: 351km
From: Auckland - Tairua - Hahei Beach - Auckland

This was a day that was a supposed to be a simple day trip to the Coromandel region, located on the other side of the Firth of Thames. The one thing I underestimated was the time that we'd need to go there and back. On hindsight, I guess we should've left the house a little earlier...heheh.

Tairua
Off we went at around noon to Tairua. The first part was a straightforward speedy drive along the highway, and then one long arterial road but once across the Waihou River, there was a really windy stretch requiring a bit of concentration and some major concern concerning the car fuel gauge. Yes, the gauge was blinking big time and I was biting my nails that we'd stall in the middle of nowhere. Thankfully, we hit Prescott's Garage, the first gas station for eons and the Camry guzzled its fair share.

Surf and Sand Takeaways (Restaurant)
After traveling for close to 2.5 hours, we were famished but our purpose was to hit Mount Paku Lookout. Checking out TripAdvisor unearthed this decent fish n chips takeaway outlet. After grabbing our due, we headed out.

Mount Paku Lookout (Place to Visit)
After another half hour's drive (suprisingly so), we found our way up the hill to have a good view of the area from Mount Paku. Nothing betta' than a lookout with some decent food to feed our hungry selves.

Hahei Beach
A very nice open beach this was. We thought to try to head to touristy Cathedral Cove, but like most tourist attractions around the New Year period, the car park was dreadfully packed so we gave this a miss. We tried Hahei beach which was inundated with cars but had a relaxing time just lounging on the beach with the children having fun on the sand.

Hot Water Beach
There was quite a bit of hooha over a beach where you could uncover the sand where you can plonk your feet into the naturally hot water, hence the name of the beach. Decided to have a look and got my *%*#$ toe stung by a bee which just happened to be lying in the sand.

After hitting all the different beaches during the day, we headed back around 7pm. Considering we had to make the full trip back to Auckland, that was pretty darn late. The trip back took just over 2 hours after which we had a late dinner and headed for bed for a deserved rest.
